Position - Building Engineer – Part Time
Reports to - Chief Building Engineer
FLSA status - Hourly, Non-Exempt
SMG, the leader in privately managed public assembly facilities has an excellent and immediate part-time opening for a Building Engineer at John Paul Jones Arena. Under supervision of the Chief Building Engineer, the part-time Building Engineer performs a variety of skilled and unskilled activities involved in the operation and maintenance of the facility’s mechanical, electrical, life safety, audio systems and general operations.
Major Responsibilities:
- Operates, monitors, repairs and maintains the facility’s audio, mechanical, electrical, and life safety systems as required for the safe and efficient operation of the facility.
- Assists with special event coverage as needed.
- Reads and interprets performance charts, control panels, blueprints, schematics, and specifications to evaluate the efficiency of each system.
- Promotes a safe working environment for all employees by following the life safety and emergency program as needed. Operates under OSHA, NFPA and other applicable safety codes.
- Follows all facility maintenance policies, procedures and programs.
- Records and logs all work performed, completes work order slips and compiles all required reports in a timely and complete manner.
- Assists other Operations Department staff to expedite event conversions as needed.
- Develops and maintains a harmonious working relationship with all of the other facility departments.
- Operates equipment such as light trucks, pallet jacks, forklifts, scrubbing machines or other light power driven equipment. Properly use all equipment needed to perform required duties.
- Operates Siemens Fire Alarm Panel, Metasys BAS system, Microlite Lighting system, audio systems, and personal computer (light use) using Windows and Microsoft Office software.
- Works extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
- Responds to routine, precautionary and emergency alarms from building automation and life safety systems.
- May occasionally have to enter areas where fumes, airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals are present.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED is required.
- 1 to 2 years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Tradesman license in one or more building trades preferred.
- Must have a solid general knowledge of all phases of the building, equipment, operations, and maintenance including the maintenance of the mechanical, electrical systems, life safety, and audio systems.
- Be familiar with operational procedures, facility capabilities, industry terminology, event-related services and technical requirements for the types of events anticipated at the facility.
- Have basic understanding of door hardware, locks, door closers, etc.
- Read and comprehend blueprints, drawings and other related materials.
- Operate Siemens Fire Alarm Panel, Metasys BAS system, Microlite Lighting system, audio systems, and personal computer (light use) using Windows and Microsoft Office software.
- Follow and adhere to all safety precautions, building codes, rules, regulations, risk management and emergency procedures.
- Meet the physical demands of this job, which include being able to get in and around the facility (requires personal mobility), lifting, carrying, moving, climbing, working from various heights, and moderate to loud noises.
- Possess any licenses, certificates or training required by local, state or national authorities for the operation of the equipment found in the facility.
- Operate standard office equipment including copier and fax machine.
- Organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
- Work effectively under pressure and/or stringent schedule and produce accurate results.
- Work independently with limited supervision, exercising judgment and initiative.
- Maintain an effective working relationship with clients, employees, exhibitors, patrons and others encountered in the course of employment.
- Be licensed and insured to operate a motor vehicle in the United States.
- Remain flexible and adjust to situations as they occur.
- Professional presentation, appearance, and work ethic.
- Ability to work long and irregular hours that may vary due to functions and events and may include day, evening, weekends and holidays.

Position - Operations Crew – Part Time
Reports to - Operations Supervisor
FLSA status - Hourly, Non-Exempt
SMG, the leader in privately managed public assembly facilities has excellent and immediate openings for part-time Operations Crew members at John Paul Jones Arena. Under general supervision, the Operations Crew members assist with general maintenance, provide general labor and help with conversions to prepare the facility for events.
Major Responsibilities:
- Assists in all aspects of the conversion process in preparation for University of Virginia athletic events and outside events such as concerts, private meetings, family shows, etc. Duties may include setting up and tearing down staging, tables, portable chairs, steel barricades, railing and other furnishings and equipment.
- Under supervision, assists with general building maintenance and operations including but not limited to; painting, replacing ceiling tiles, fixing seats, loading/unloading delivery trucks, etc.
- Follows all policies/procedures, risk management, safety precautions, rules, regulations and emergency procedures established at the facility. Reports all irregularities, discrepancies, loss of property, and safety and damage concerns to the supervisor.
- Maintains effective working relationships and high level of customer service with clients, employees, exhibitors, patrons and others encountered through the course of employment.
- Performs housekeeping duties as assigned.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED is required.
- Operational knowledge of tools and equipment is helpful; forklift experience is a plus.
- Ability to take/follow direction from multiple supervisors and management staff.
- Ability to work as part of a team and also able to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.
- Remain flexible and adjust to situations as they occur.
- Strong attention to detail and follow through.
- Must be able to follow oral and written instructions in English and communicate in English effectively with others in oral and written form.
- Must be able to perform a high degree of physical exertion including lifting up to 50 lbs, carrying, moving and climbing.
- Work extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays as needed (schedule will be based on event schedules and staffing needs).
